Aerated concrete blocks, Ytong blocks Information – dimensions and prices

Aerated concrete has many good properties, but this product has little to do with concrete. Aerated concrete is often named after the well-known manufacturer as aerated concrete or Ytong stone. Its low weight and yet very high strength make aerated concrete so popular, along with several other advantages. The mineral stone is, so to speak, inflated. We show you all the facts here.

The basis for aerated concrete is usually a mixture of quartz-containing sand powder, lime, and/or cement mortar. The components are all finely ground and therefore have little resemblance to concrete. The inflated aerated concrete is strengthened by steam hardening. There are now numerous prefabricated elements that can represent the complete prefabricated components of a house. Bricks are also available in numerous sizes and strength classes. However, Ytong stones also have small disadvantages, such as the absorption of moisture is not optimal. However, even beginners and DIY enthusiasts can build perfect walls with aerated concrete. Here you will find all information about aerated concrete blocks, their dimensions, and prices.

Internationally known and popular

Aerated concrete is not only highly valued in America. The Swedish architect Axel Erikson undertook his first laboratory tests as early as 1918. In 1924 he applied for a patent for his process for the production of aerated concrete blocks. As early as 1929, the industrial production of these diverse stones started in Yxhult in Sweden. Therefore, the Yxhults Anghärdade aerated concrete later became the world’s first building material brand to be registered. That was, of course, the Ytong that is well known today.

In Germany, too, there was a lot of activity and another internationally known and popular brand for aerated concrete is “Hebel”. The first factory for the production of Hebel aerated concrete was opened in Germany in 1943. The founder of the company was the construction engineer Josef Hebel, who had previously carried out his tests in Memmingen, regardless of the manufacturing processes that Ytong was already using.

Various aerated concrete products

Today there are a large number of special prefabricated components and masonry blocks made of aerated concrete. Although the low material density achieves just as good thermal insulation of the aerated concrete as bricks can, the sound insulation of aerated concrete still lags behind that of the brick.

  • Plan block
  • Jumbo plan block
  • Jumbo in a double pack
  • Corner and reveal stone
  • Roller shutter lintel
  • Roller shutter box
  • Falls
  • U-shell
  • Compensation stone
  • Shuttering block
  • Kimmstein
  • Plan building board
  • Ceiling stone
  • Slab edge insulation formwork
  • System wall element
  • Partition element
  • stairway

Tip: Sand-lime brick is manufactured in a similar way to lightweight aerated concrete brick. The sand-lime brick is also hardened by steam. Similar to aerated concrete, the sand-lime brick should not be directly exposed to moisture. This means that an outer wall made of aerated concrete or sand-lime brick either needs a weatherproof outer skin, such as a clinker brick, or impregnation using a coating with plaster or the like. However, the number of dimensions for sand-lime brick is not nearly as varied as for aerated concrete brick.

Reinforcement in precast elements

Wall panels, ceiling, and roof panels made of aerated concrete contain steel reinforcement, similar to comparable reinforced concrete components. Special wall panels with steel for load-bearing walls are available in the building materials trade. Different dimensions are also available for the special components. In many cases, however, custom-made products are also manufactured. For walls that have no load-bearing function, there are corresponding lighter wall panels. However, such prefabricated parts are usually set up or set up by specialist companies with a crane.

Dimensions and sizes – aerated concrete blocks for every purpose

The usual plan stones usually have a length of 62.5 centimeters and a height of 25 centimeters.

These plan stones are available in the following strengths:

  • 5 centimeters
  • 7.5 centimeters
  • 10 centimeters
  • 12 centimeters
  • 15 centimeters
  • 20 centimeters
  • 25 centimeters
  • 30 centimeters

Tip: If you only need a few aerated concrete blocks that differ from the others that you have to build, it is usually not worth buying extra sizes. Due to the individual purchase, the prices for aerated concrete blocks are often significantly higher. Since Ytong is particularly easy to cut, you can adjust the size quickly and easily with a saw.

Plan blocks of aerated concrete

Flat blocks are also available in several sizes, which are very useful for many purposes.

Aerated concrete – dimensions
  • 17.5 centimeters wide – 59.9 x 24.9 centimeters
  • 20 centimeters wide – 59.9 x 24.9 centimeters
  • 24 centimeters wide – 59.9 x 24.9 centimeters
  • 30 centimeters wide – 59.9 x 24.9 centimeters
  • 36.5 centimeters wide – 59.9 x 24.9 centimeters

Thermoblocks for the quick outer wall

There are special thermoblocks for well-insulated exterior walls, some of which even make additional insulation superfluous thanks to their excellent thermal insulation. In addition, external walls can be erected very quickly with these thick, large aerated concrete blocks, regardless of whether you want to glue or brick the thermal blocks.

  • Thermoblock
    • Length 62.5 or 50 centimeters
    • Depth 30, 40, and 50 centimeters
    • Height 20 centimeters

Strength classes at Ytong

So that there are no mix-ups when using the aerated concrete blocks, the strength class is usually color-coded on some blocks on each pallet. Depending on the pressure that is later exerted on the wall, it must be built from stones of a different strength class. The structural engineer usually specifies in the construction plans which strength class must be used for the respective wall.

These colors apply to the individual strength classes of aerated concrete blocks:

  • green – strength class 2
  • blue – strength class 4
  • red – strength class 6
  • black – strength class 8

Costs and prices for Ytong and Co.

For many of the aerated concrete products from Ytong, Hebel, and other manufacturers, the prices are partly based on the number of stones that you buy for your building project.

Tip: Since, of course, only the prices for a single aerated concrete item can often be shown here, you should always ask about discounts for quantity purchases or complete pallets for larger quantities. It is also important to ask different retailers about the prices for the quantities required.

  • Price / m² – aerated concrete slab (62.5 x 25 cm)
    • 5 centimeters – 6.70 euros
    • 7.5 centimeters – 10.20 euros
    • 10 centimeters – 13.50 euros

    • 125 x 12.5 centimeters – about 22.00 euros

Processing of aerated concrete

One of the greatest advantages of aerated concrete, however, is the extremely easy processing of the stones, prefabricated elements, and flat building panels. You can choose to wall or glue aerated concrete. Since aerated concrete is manufactured with particularly precise dimensions, even a beginner can work very precisely when gluing the stones. The joint thickness of aerated concrete blocks is between one and three millimeters. This allows a wall to be planned perfectly in advance because the joints remain invisible when the stones are glued. But even with the walling of the aerated concrete blocks, you can work particularly precisely.

Easy processing of aerated concrete

The stones and elements can easily be adjusted to the required dimensions with a simple saw. Breakthroughs and pipe penetrations can also be easily placed in an aerated concrete block. The use of aerated concrete even makes it easier to lay cables and lines in the wall and can therefore also be carried out more cheaply.
